Two separate landmine explosions occurred in Naikshangchhari in Bandarban, on the border with Bangladesh and Myanmar, on Friday. Three Bangladeshis are reported to have been injured.
According to various media reports in the country, the border area has come under the control of the rebel group Arakan Army after the country's military junta's prolonged war inside Myanmar.
Meanwhile, three people were injured in a landmine explosion on Friday, which has spread fresh panic in the border area of Naikshangchhari.
Naikshangchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Muhammad Mazharul Islam Chowdhury told BBC Bangla, "The three Bangladeshis may have tried to cross the border area subconsciously or consciously with bad intentions."
BBC Bangla spoke to local residents, public representatives and the local administration to find out why three such incidents suddenly occurred in one day.
A former chairman there, speaking on condition of anonymity, told BBC Bangla that since the Myanmar part of the Naiksyangchhari border area recently came under the control of the Arakan Army, various goods from Bangladesh are going to Myanmar. At the same time, various goods, including cattle, are coming to Bangladesh from that country.
The former public representative also said that to bring goods and enter illegally through certain routes along the border, one has to pay a 'bribe' to the Myanmar rebel forces.
"As far as I know, many people use alternative routes to smuggle goods without paying bribes. Those who went on Friday were injured in a mine explosion while taking that alternative route."
Security analysts say that the purpose of land mines on the border is not to kill the enemy, but to hinder the enemy. Even if someone plants them, it has to be done in accordance with a specific law.
